CIALIS (Tadalafil)

Cialis is the trade name for the drug Tadalafil. It helps men with erectile dysfunction (male impotence) by enhancing the erectile response when a man is sexually stimulated. Cialis works by limiting the activity of enzymes and increasing blood flow to the penis to improve erectile potency.

It is also for treating the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. Cialis helps improve symptoms such as needing to pass urine frequently or urgently but having a weak flow of urine or being unable to fully empty the bladder when you do go.

Dosage

The doctor needs to decide which dosage of Cialis is most appropriate. The doctor will take into account potential drug interactions, your age, the severity of your impotence and any previous experience you have had with Cialis.

Cialis tablets may be taken with or without food. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Cialis 10mg and 20mg tablets are on an ‘as needed’ basis for erectile dysfunction. With these strength tablets, you should take your dose at least 30 minutes before your intended sex. One dose can produce an erection in response to sexual stimulation for up to 36 hours. These tablets should be taken no more than once a day, and should not be taken every day on a continuous basis.

How long does Cialis stay in your system?

For most men, Cialis starts affecting the body a half-hour to an hour after taking a dose, and the drug typically remains in the system for around 36 hours, on average.  However, there are other factors that can affect how long Cialis stays in your system.

Compared to sildenafil and vardenafil, tadalafil has the longest duration of action. Cialis stays in your system for up to 36 hours or more, though there are other factors that can affect how long the drug stays in your body. The half-life of Cialis is 17.5 hours, while Viagra has a half-life of 3–5 hours. That is why the effects of Cialis can last for up to 2 days or more. As with all medications, Cialis can affect each person differently.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with tadalafil are:

  • Headache;
  • Indigestion;
  • Stomach aches;
  • Back pain;
  • Muscle pains;
  • Flushing;
  • Runny nose.

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that may be associated with tadalafil. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn’t mean that all people taking Cialis will experience that or any side effect.

Precautions and Warnings before taking Cialis

  • Take Cialis not more than once a day.
  • Tadalafil may make you feel dizzy or affect your vision and so may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Don’t drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you and you are sure it won’t affect your performance.
  • It’s best to avoid drinking too much alcohol if you’re taking tadalafil. Drinking alcohol can reduce your ability to get an erection and so might make the tadalafil less effective. As tadalafil can also make some people feel dizzy or lightheaded, this could become worse if you drink alcohol.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking Cialis, as it may increase the level of tadalafil in your blood and hence increase the risk of side effects.

Who shouldn’t take Cialis?

  • People who have conditions in which sexual activity is not advisable, for example, severe heart disorders such as unstable angina, a heart condition that occurs during sex, severe heart failure or an irregular heartbeat not controlled by medication. If you have a heart condition your doctor will be able to advise if it’s safe for you to take tadalafil and have sex.
  • People who have had a heart attack in the last three months.
  • Those who have had a stroke in the last six months.
  • People with high blood pressure (hypertension) not controlled by treatment.
  • Those with low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • People taking the medicine riociguat, or any form of nitrate medication.
  • Those who have ever experienced an eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition causes a sudden, partial decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes due to damage to the optic nerve. It can be temporary or permanent. Make sure your doctor knows if you have ever experienced this.
  • People who are allergic to any ingredient of the medicine. Check the ingredients listed in the leaflet that comes with the medicine if you know you have specific allergies or intolerances.
  • Cialis is not for women, or for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Discuss your health with your doctor to ensure that you are healthy enough for sex. Most importantly, if you are taking any medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Also, an interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Speak to your doctor about how to manage any drug interactions. And if you have plans to buy Cialis online, make sure to consider buying from your most trusted online pharmacies only.
